A cartoon about the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the most famous British chamber orchestra, depicts a radio with a speech bubble reading: “You have just heard the Academy of St Martin in the Fields conducted by...”. Next to it, a parrot sits on its perch and squawks, “Neville Marriner!” The legendary era under founder Sir Neville lasted until 2011 – a sensational 53 years. With Joshua Bell as artistic director, a generational change has taken place at the highest level. The star violinist plays and conducts Paganini’s virtuoso Violin Concerto No. 1 as well as Tartini’s “Devil’s Trill Sonata”, whose origin, the composer wrote, stems from a dream visit by Beelzebub as an extremely talented violinist. Robert Schumann, whose Symphony No. 2 ends the concert, did not leave such a colourful account of his creation. However, it has been handed down that the symphony may have frightened away his personal demons – upon its completion, his depression lifted temporarily.
