Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64

INTERMISSION

Maurice Ravel
Daphnis et Chloé (Ballet in Three Parts)

Description

Among Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's instrumental concertos, his violin concerto has enjoyed a particularly high status since its composition and premiere in the mid-1840s. As a work of great melodic qualities, harmonic finesse and rhythmic intensity, it has not received much admiration for nothing.

Maurice Ravel's ballet music to Daphnis et Chloé, composed and premiered in 1912 for the Ballets Russes, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of French Impressionism, with floating sounds and multiple nuances of colour, as well as a wordless chorus. A story from Greek mythology is impressively brought to life with and through music.
