Ludwig van Beethoven
String Quartet in A minor, op. 132
Description
To mark the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death, the Quatuor Ébène continues its Beethoven cycle, presenting a programme that spans the full breadth of Beethoven’s artistic development. In the early String Quartets, Op. 18, Beethoven still draws inspiration from his teacher Joseph Haydn, yet already reveals an unmistakable voice.
The sixth quartet in Opus 18 is distinguished by its wide range of moods – from melancholy to exuberance. With the late A minor Quartet, Op. 132, Beethoven enters a new, complex world of expression. The work is best known for its deeply moving slow movement “Holy Song of Thanksgiving of a Convalescent to the Deity”.
