Description
For English composers of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, the viol consort provided a welcome escape from the strict rules of music written for religious occasions: it became a laboratory where these artists were free to express their most daring ideas and most eccentric musical thoughts. The ensemble Phantasm, one of today’s leading viol consorts and recently heard at the Pierre Boulez Saal in the interdisciplinary performance The Art of Being Human, introduces four of these innovative composers, presenting works by Christopher Tye, Matthew Locke, William Lawes, and Henry Purcell.
